YouTube has decided to reduce video resolution worldwide

YouTube will reduce the accuracy of videos worldwide from today in an effort to facilitate online traffic amid the new coronavirus outbreak, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday.

The agency quoted YouTube as saying that in the coming days viewers will see videos in 480p standard resolution.

The move from YouTube is a continuation of a move it has begun in Europe, where regulators have asked major streaming services, such as Netflix and Amazon, to reduce the accuracy of videos in the EU to avoid a broadcast ing stalemate as thousands of Europeans, forced by the new Corona virus outbreak to stay in their homes, to work from home.

It's a good thing that YouTube will only adjust the default resolution, meaning that you can manually adjust the resolution in each video you watch for a higher resolution as usual as your connection can handle. Unlike other services mentioned, users are now forced to view with less than high or full resolution and there is no way to change them even if you have a fast connection.

Europe's telecommunications providers, from Vodafone to Deutsche Telekom, reported a sharp rise in data traffic in recent days, forcing regulators to issue a pre-emptive call before the Internet outage. Regulators want the Internet to be able to handle vital services, such as health care, and online learning by thousands of children who are enrolled in homes due to the new CORONA virus outbreak.

Netflix, YouTube, Apple, Amazon and Facebook gradually announced last week that they would reduce video quality in visual content to restrict data consumption as a result of the home quarantine application in several European countries and increase video viewing rates.

YouTube has 2 billion active users per month, and the volume of user consumption is no different than usual, but YouTube has seen a difference in consumption pattern as most of them become homes, and watch hours are longer but with a lower peak size.
